Deadly Couture Design Launches OnlineGothic Shop
Jennifer Wong is a fashion designer who has drawn inspiration from the alternative subculture, including gothic design. She has recently relaunched her online store, Deadly Couture and has provided an exclusive interview with Goth Style Secrets for her new direction of her online gothic shop.
1. How did you get started as a Gothic style designer?
I got started in 1999 when I started becoming very influenced in the EBM and Gothic industrial music scene. I really wanted to wear clothes that expressed that individuality sense of style. I was a fine arts student and that time and had no money so I started to design clothing for myself. Soon after I was commissioned by others to design pieces for them. It grew from there. First I should my designs in one shop, then two and then more.
2. Did you go to school for alternative fashion designing?
My degree is in Fine Arts from Emily Carr and graduated in 2005. I was already doing fashion in my free time at that point, but I didn't major in fashion. I never went to school for fashion design. I opened my own retail shop, Deadly Couture in 2006 and I've been holding my own ever since.
3. Who is your ideal client for your designs?
My designs are ideal for anyone regardless if they want extreme cutting edge alternative style, a corset for a special occasion or perhaps just a little something to jazz up an outfit. My clients are generally not afraid to make a statement with their style and their confidence is even more apparent, when walk into a room looking all decked out and fabulous.
4. What is your advice in making Gothic style attire fit into everyday life?
My advice would is to be always feel comfortable in the clothes that you wear. I currently have an amazing line of corporate Goth wear in stock that’s suitable for work and play. There's always little ways to Goth up your everyday life with Mary Jane shoes and a black blazer. Gothic style is very classic and limitless in how you can incorporate it to your everyday style. Just remember you represent your self by the way you dress so feel proud about what you wear and others will appreciate your boldness.
5. How does the relaunched website represent a new direction for Deadly Couture?
The store stock at Deadly Couture changes weekly. When I design an item or bring a piece, I only do one size run of each. I want to make things fresh of my customers and I really believe that the customer appreciates not having the same piece of gothic apparel as 10 or 20 other people. What's the point of being unique if everyone is dressed the same as you.
This where the online gothic shop is most important. It gives everyone the chance to get those hard to seek items and see what we have in stock before it sells out and it becomes unavailable. I carry a lot of different companies as well as my own that excel at making unique and amazing Gothic Designs. I love sharing the excitement of dressing up and doing it right whether it's original old school Goth, Gothic industrial, Cyber Goth, or Gothic Lolita. The items on the site are changing daily. It's my hope that Deadly Couture customers will enjoy the fact that they can order out of the privacy of their homes and still receive the same customer service that I provide in my retail location.
6. What are your plans for Deadly Couture for 2009 and beyond?
My plans for Deadly Couture in 2009 and beyond is to just keep going and expand the website. Also, keep designing and making my clients happy because I like to make kick ass and stunning clothing, while keeping Gothic style original and innovative at www.deadlyfetish.com.
