Gothic Makeup Ideas for the Holidays
With the holiday season around the corner, consider theatrical gothic makeup ideas such as a paler complexion, smoky eyes and darker lips with these tips: 1. Whiteface can be achieved with a white full coverage foundation. If you have dark skin instead, mix the white foundation with your own shade of foundation and then put the lightest powder over it. 2. For gothic eye makeup, black eye liner is a must. Black powder eye shadow adds spookiness and drama, also reminescent of the 1920s. Liquid eyeliner works best for a gothic look and style, but if your hands shake use the most expensive pencil you can afford. Cheap pencils go on faint and will smudge after an hour. 3. For gothic lips, find a dark shade of lipstick. Apply it with a lip brush for a more precise and dramatic effect. With a dark red or black lipstick and a liner you can reshape your lips. Take the liner, draw the desired outline and fill them in with the lipstick, blot and retouch with lipstick. The liner does not have to be the same shade as the lipstick, but it should be darker. Gothic Cape (Opera Cloak)For holiday events, a gothic cape or opera cloak could be the perfect addition. A gothic cape is generally fasten at the neck or over the shoulder, vary in length, from ankle all the way up to the hip, mid-calf being the normal length. They may have an attached hood, and may cover and fasten down the front, in which case they have holes or slits for the hands to pass through and are almost always sleeveless. A gothic cape or opera cloak to be worn over formal wear can be made from satin and embellished with fringes, appliques and fancy closures. The three-quarter length gothic cape below is from Butterick See & Sew Pattern B4266. This is a very easy pattern suitable for beginners and takes about 8 hours to cut, sew and finish. Tip: To sew the 16 feet fringe to the hem of the gothic cape, do not remove the manufacturer's basting stitch until after the fringe has been pinned and straight-stitched to the cape. The basting stitch keeps the fringe together and prevents it from being displaced along the edge.
