Be Goth with a New Identity

To be Goth, start with a gothic name that suits you and helps you become the goth you have always wanted to be. I chose Eureka as my name to be Goth as it represents the moment of insight in the midst of chaos and darkness. This came about after realizing that I needed to know my inner darkness as much as my inner light to be goth.

The gothic name Eureka means the light. Darkness is a major aspect of Goth, which has been negatively portrayed by popular media. An alternative viewpoint to the mainstream is that Goth is about facing our deepest fears since running away from them will only make them stronger. What you resist will persist. Light exists because darkness coexists. Eureka is the sudden clarity emerging from the depths of chaos and the midst of darkness.

In the early days, Goth style was black-clad and bohemian. And being creatively-inclined, as art and literature were my absolutely favorite subjects, I thought the all-black ensemble was purely a reflection of the artistic traditional garb, from the Renaissance painters to the Beat poets congregating in cafes to discuss intellectual matters. Little did I know that the eighties anti-fashion stance of alternative free-thinkers was the germination of one of the most influential and longest-lasting artistic movements in our times.
